Feast of Bats: The Los Angeles Deathrock of Black Heroin Gallery

UTMMUSICGROUP

Black Heroin Gallery - Feast of Bats Pestilence Windfolk Records, 2022 L.A. deathrockers launch new CD album, 1 April 2022.

Straight from the heartland of Californian deathrock, Feast of Bats (Pestilent Windfolk Records, 2022) is the brand-new album from Los Angeles’ BLACK HEROIN GALLERY – the long-awaited follow-up to the band’s full-length debut, The Dreadful Dead of Hoop Snake Hollow (Alice In… Records, 2016). CD presales launch today, for Bandcamp Friday.

Highly theatrical and overtly gothic, Feast of Bats ranges from sprawling, labyrinthine, gloom laden epics and snaking dirges; to neo-tribal deathrock and snarling dark punk. The sound is dominated throughout by the anguished vocal histrionics of founder and bandleader Eyajo December Joseph – former keyboardist, lyricist and cofounder of hugely popular deathrock / gutterglam outfit Astrovamps (1990-2007), and onetime keyboardist for long-running Hollywood gothic blackmetal band Willow Wisp. Eyajo says of the new BLACK HEROIN GALLERY album:

Feast Of Bats is the Goth rock album I’ve waited over 30 years to make. It’s filled with love, pain, darkness, hope, and haunting stories; all brought to life by the musical artistry of Black Heroin Gallery. We have finally found our sound. This album will serve as an archetype for all our future releases.”

While several other members have passed through the ranks, since their formation in 2007 Eyajo has been joined in the group by drummer Tony F. Corpse, who also played with Eyajo at different times in both Astrovamps and Willow Wisp (which Tony co-founded). The scything guitars of Krystal Fantomhave been a permanent fixture since 2015, while bassist Dracul Grotesquecame aboard in late 2021 for recording of the new Feast of Bats album. More recently, the band have enlisted second keyboardist Skye Lee Vague for live shows. BLACK HEROIN GALLERY made their live debut in 2014, after a long gestation period developing material. The promotional CD release of the My Rotting Flower EP followed in 2015, on Eyajo’s own label imprint Pestilent Windfolk Records, before signing with Germany’s Alice In…, onetime label for Astrovamps. The debut album The Dreadful Dead of Hoop Snake Hollow appeared the following year, generating great response around Germany and Europe from the likes of Orkus, Sonic Seducer, and Side-Line Magazine. Back home, BLACK HEROIN GALLERY would go on to play bills headlined by 45 Grave at the iconic Whiskey A Go Go, and have toured to Mexico twice to play gothic festivals and tour-dates alongside Gitane Demone, Readership Hostile, and the UK’s Screaming Dead.

Finally, presales for physical CDs of the sophomore album Feast of Bats have just launched today from Bandcamp, for official release in early May. The digital version can meanwhile be downloaded in full, and is already streaming on all major platforms. The band will celebrate the album’s release live when they return to Mexico City for World Goth Day on 14 May 2022.
